The 2 annual Pictures in the Park was a phenomenal success this year…thank you all! On Sunday, October 4, friends and neighbors of Highcroft and Sonoma Dixon took part in a fundraiser to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. The event is Pictures in the Park. The Highcroft community comes together in Sears Farm Road Park which is located off of Sears Farm Road in Highcroft to donate their time and talents to take fabulous family fall photos. Families make a donation and in return get a beautiful professional looking family photo taken in the park by our fabulous neighborhood photographer Nancy Blackert. 100% of the proceeds is donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help search for a cure for Juvenile Diabetes in honor of Sonoma Dixon, a Highcroft neighbor recently diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes. This year together we raised $640.00 for the cause thanks to everyone who unselfishly donated their support, their time and their talents. It was a great way to spend a beautiful afternoon with friends and neighbors! I am looking forward to next year.

Silver Finger Print Jewelry

I have found a way to have a piece of my babies with me at all times. I wear their fingerprints. Silverkiln is this great designer of precious metal clay jewelry. On a small silver charm is an imprint of my child’s fingerprint. I now have a silver necklace with 3 silver fingerprint charms that I love to wear. Silverkiln can mold, make imprints and manipulate the clay to design unique pieces of silver, gold or bronze jewelry. The photo above is a pair double drop finger print earrings in silver. Cool! I have even seen her take a piece of child’s art work and transfer it into a silver necklace charm. I think this is so awesome! What a fantastic and creative way to preserve something as precious as a fingerprint or a picture drawn by your 2 year old and have it out where you can enjoy it every day. I LOVE THIS! Silverkiln is located in West Cary and will be at the Western Wake Farmers Market Craft Fair on November 7 so stop by and see some of her work.

BORDERS Reading Challenge

Borders and Waldenbooks is having a reading challenge for the summer of 2009. The challenge will take place this year from May 26th until August 31st. Children ages 12 and under may participate by reading any 8 books, list them on the summer reading challenge flier and have a parent or guardian sign the list to verify that they have completed the books. Parents are also encouraged to read to their children as part of the challenge. The children my choose any book that they like and there is no purchase required to take this challenge. When your child has completed their list of the 8 books that they have read they can turn their reading challenge flyer and coupon into any Borders or Waldenbooks and receive one of the reading challenge items listed below for $4.99. That is 50% or more of the retail price.

FYI to all flip flop lovers out there that live their summer in rubber flip flops, this Saturday only May 23, 2009, Old Navy is having a sale on flip flops. All of their solid colored flip flops will be on sale for $1.00. These flip flops are a steal at 2 for $5.00 but at a dollar each….well that is a no brainer. (Limit 5 per customer and no metalic flip flops are in their fine print.)

Check out this great new item at Old Navy. I found them yesterday at the Old Navy in Beaver Creek Commons. Linen Pants with a draw string waist, zip up fly and coconut button closure. They have two scoop pockets in the front and two button close pockets in the back. They are very comfortable. They are $29.00. After shopping around for a pair of causal and comfortable linen pants these are the best I have found for the money. They are soft, light weight and stretchy. After you try them on do a squat so you can see how much they will stretch in the rear. Oh yeah, the drawstring is made out of cotton so it isn’t stiff when you tie it so it lays nicely. Mindfulness

Being mindfull throughout your day can help you to reduce anxiety and stress. We have all heard this, read this and wish we could do this. Taking a simple task of making your bed (or beds) and thinking of only that moment. Putting pride in your task, doing your best and breathing through it will actually limit the anxiety that you will feel. After all you will not be thinking of the 30 other things that need to be done that day. It is O.K. to take pride in your simple chores like making beds or folding laundry heck Martha Stewart made a career out of it not to mention millions. Spring Daze arts & crafts festivals

Spring Daze will be held this Saturday, April 25, 2009 in Bond Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join family and friends to enjoy great entertainment from Cary Players, Cary Children’s Concert Choir and Triangle Brass Band just to name a few. There will be arts and crafts, story tellers and great food. Enjoy the beautiful community we live not to mention our beautiful weather.

Photo Contest

Cary Today magazine is having an amateur photo contest. The photos must show people in a recognizable venue. The Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival or the opening of the Western Wake Farmers Market would be great places to find and capture those great shots. High resolution jpeg images need to be sent in by May 15th to carynews@nando.com. The winners will have their photos published in the Cary Today magazine.

New Farmers Market

I love getting up early on Saturday morning and going to the Farmers Market. I am very excited to find out that I will no longer have to drive 30 minutes to Raleigh or Carborro to visit one. There will be a new Farmers Market in town! The Western Wake Farmers’ Market opens Saturday, May 2. It will be held on Saturdays 8am-12pm May to November. They will be located in Carpenter Village which is on Morrisville Carpenter Road between Hwy 55 and Davis drive. There will be over 20 local vendors participating in the Farmers Market.
